Snow Leopard on Acer Aspire One: Part 2: Preparing your Installers

Friday, July 29, 2011

UPDATE: For an updated version of installer preparation that is more general and detailed, click here.

So now that your partitions are ready for the allocation of Mac OS X, you now need Mac OS X and some other things.
I used iAtkos s3 v2 to install Mac on my netbook. You can find a download for it, or you can use the one that I used. The download links will follow.
If you will be using USBs to install your system, you will also need the NBI boot loader, along with Transmac. Download links will follow shortly.

Required Downloads

Downloading iAtkos s3 v2

I used a torrent to download iAtkos as it was the easiest way to find and get it easily. If you use my download link for it, you will need a program called uTorrent which can download torrent files.
Torrent files are files used in peer-to-peer file sharing which can be used to share information and software.
To get the best out of uTorrent, you want to right click on the torrent and allocate maximum bandwidth. If you are low on bandwidth because of your ISP, then you can cap the upload speed and then stop the download once its finished.

Using a DVDs to Install iAtkos

If you have an external DVD drive, or will be using this guide on another computer (as the steps are very similar), then this is how you do it. If you don’t have an external DVD drive, or want to use USBs to set everything up, go to the Using a USB to install iAtkos section.
The steps are very simple. You will need a DVD and a CD – or 2 DVDs. On the DVD, you will burn the iAtkos ISO with your favorite disk burner. In Windows 7, you can use the one that is built in. Do the same with the NBI boot loader on a CD or other DVD. It uses an IMG file type.
Once this is complete, you are ready to go to the next article.

Using a USB to install iAtkos

If you want to use USBs to install Mac, you will need 2. One that is at least 8Gb and one that is about 1Gb.
You will also need a program called Transmac. You won’t need it everyday so a 15 day trial will suffice to mount the files to their respective USBs.

Download Transmac

Transmac 10.0

What you will do is right click on the USB drives in Transmac and choose Format Disk and choose Format with Disk Image. It will then prompt you for the files. With the 8Gb USB, you will mount iAtkos (4.37Gb) and with the 1Gb USB you will mount the NBI image.
Once this is done, you can proceed to the next step.

Hello, Do you know if this method works if the Acer aspire one bz 454? it has the AMD dual core processor, will that work the same? or will I have to make any change during installation?

Thank you very much

@Brandon There is a modification, but in Part 3. If NBI doesn't boot, then use the Empire EFI version that is made for AMD. AMD and Intel Boot loader The procedure of writing it to a USB should remain the same.

A friend of mine tried to install this on his AMD processor and always got stuck at the apple screen where it wouldn't load. However, there is a fix. In Part 3, you will need to go to modified kernels in the patches folder and choose the qoopz kernel. Consequently, you will need to update qoopz when OS X gets updated to avoid kernel panics.

Hope this helps. A Side Note post for AMD users will be up shortly.

Thanks for the fast answer! Well, I'll try the way it is in the post first and if I have any problems I'll start from where you're saying. Well, I tryed another method before and the NBI worked, let's see this time. I'm not really sure if know how to modified this kernels, I saw many videos and tutorias, but I'm not really sure how to do that.
Later I'll put my results here.

Thanks once more!

@Brandon No problem. I would recommend going through the tutorial first and then if it fails going in and making the mods. Great to hear that NBI worked on AMD. I look forward to hearing your results.

Hello again, I tried to install, but I couldn't. I boot the right way with the NBI, but when I select to open the usb that has the mac operational system, the apple logo appears, but screen starts to freak out and shake, do you know what I'm doing wrong??

thank you

@Brandon It is likely that NBI doesn't support AMD processors. Try using an AMD compatible like Empire EFI (Link in my initial response). That should get you into the installer.

Hi once more CSIYF, I'm sorry about so many questions, but I couldn't find anything in the internet that shows how can use the Empire EFI on the flash drive, I'm saying that because I have a netbook, so I won't be able to burn it on a DVD or CD. Do you know if it's possible to do that?

Thanks

@BrandonDon't worry about the amount of questions. When you download the Empire EFI you should either get an IMG or ISO file which you then used the outlined procedure in this article and use Empire EFI in the place of NBI.

Hi i have acer aspire one D255E, i tried boot mac but after a hit f2 make the change e save dont show up f12 and i cant find the bottom in shud down in right corner please help me

@muskkitoHave you read Part 3, if not, refer to it. If so, then go into your bios to your Boot settings and set the boot priority to the USB drive and then save and it will restart into the detected USB automatically.

If that doesn't work, then look for a hard drive priority and set it to the USB. Note that at the beginning of Part 4, you will need to go back into the bios and change the priority back to the hard drive.

Hope that helps.

@Julian hi Julian thanks for help me out my flhas drive have 16 fgb but every time i put the iAtkos 4.37 GB, said this too large for this usb, and i put the iAtkos in my passport, may be this the problem? please help me out i ready want this in my acer. thansk you

@muskkito Are you trying to boot off iAtkos directly? If so, it won't work and that is your problem.

In order to get iAtkos to boot, you need to make a boot loader flash drive.

Therefore: If you use a CD drive, you are good with iAtkos.

But, since you are booting off a USB device, you must first boot into NBI and then choose the iAtkos drive/partition.

Therefore, the solution to your problem is to make the NBI USB drive (detailed above) and then boot off it and then choose the iAtkos disk in the NBI boot loader.

Hope that helps. You will see what I mean when you read Part 3.
